Cleland Waterfall Gully - Mt Lofty PDF Print E-mail

The Kiosk to Mt Lofty. This walk is the standard Sunday morning 40 - 60 minute walk up the track to Mt.Lofty via "Cardiac Hill" to the Summit for Coffee. It is a very easy track to follow. This walk commeneces at the Kiosk at the end of Waterfall Gully Road. The Waterfall itself is a frequently visit and photgraphed icon. The are a number of other highlights for the leisure walker. Second Falls, and the remanents of Chinamans Hut. In November 2005, alot of water came down and left significant change to the environemntally significant Wilson Bog.

Anyway, up the steps to the top of the Waterfall, pass the turn off to Castle Rock on the left. A couple of minutes later we come to the second waterfall to the left of our summit track which rises steeply to the right. Shortly you will see the cutback to Eagle on the Hill via the Yurrebilla Trail

After this strenuos section the track levels out and we come to the remnants of Chinamans Hut Ruins to the left of our main track in a clearing by the creek. We continue along the track and over a little wooden bridge before a short ascent past the significant Wilson Bog and cross another wooden bridge where to Yurrebilla Trail continues along the Bilba Track on our left towards Cleland Wildlife park.

We take the narrower right fork and head up the creek, up a steep incline and tackle what we know as Cardiac Hill. At the top of this incline we see the Harford Track to Cleland. This is an intersesting walk which we can explore another time. Shortly after we come to a four wheel drive track along which the Heysen Trail comes. It does a sharp left turn and joins us as we continue along the narrower track and up the hill passing the Youth Hostel on our right. Again we reach a little intersection where we take the right fork and head up the incline to some steps just before crossing Summit Road before making the final ascent to Mt Lofty.

Again what a beautiful view we have, overlooking Adelaide, with a sighting of the other side of the gulf on a good day, and the clouds below on a not so good day. Which ever way, it is a fair reward for a solid walk and well rewarded by a coffee stop.
